Jay and I called into Killoran’s Pub in the town of Tubbercurry. Now your man could not say exactly he was related to the great Sligo fiddler, Paddy Killoran who recorded in New york in the 20’s and 30’s he did say “We’re all branches on the same tree”. He opened up the dance hall and it was spectacular. There on the wall featured a lrge painting the incuded Michael Coleman, Paddy Killoran and James Morrison standing and playing their fiddles by a lake.
Their was a wind up gramophone there. The next thing you know we are listing to 78’s of Coleman and Morrison on the gramophone! Surreal.

I met up with Billy O’Connor for the session at the Crane. Also there was Anthony O’Connor. “John was the stable one in the family,. Anthony the wild one.” Billy, Lisa and the 2 daughters spent most of the summer in Canada this year and apparently it’s all they talk about. “When can we go back to Canada?” Billy & Lisa had thought perhaps in the future it would be nice to retire in Italy. Then they came to the beautiful mountain town of Nelson,B.C. “We’ll just stay here”.
Anthony told me a story. “It was 26 years ago. John & I were in the same pub but separately. I was at one end getting into a fight, I was aching to bring it on. Then in ten seconds I was rolling on the floor throwing punches and taking puches and bleeding profusely. Now john is not a fighter but he would always defend his brother. He came flying in from across the room, landed a few blows and pulled me outside into the car. I didn’t want to go to the hospital but he insistd and 20 stitches later I was done.”
The session was not as exciting as that but lovely music with George on pipes , Kevin Whelan on banjo, And a dozen others including Cathal Johnson (harmonica), Glen Watkins (flute) and Marta from Spain (flute).
Walked in from Renmore in the Lashing rain. A very small and lovely session with only Mick, Anders and myself. It would have been a lovely quiet session but for the College ceili session going on upstairs, I thought the roof would come in. Old friends Christine & Gerry Marti showed up. They just happen to arrive in Galway every October as I do.
I will arrive in Eire on October 12, 2019. A pint anyone? Georgia arrives a week later.
Georgia and I will perform 2-45 minute sets tomorrow at Elk Island Park. Sets are at 1:00pm & 3:00pm at Astotin Lake Recreation Area Stage at the north end of the park. Regular National Park admission applies.
Georgia and I will be playing a free family event in Spruce Grove Saturday May 12th.
It is in the McLaughlin neighbourhood.
We are performing from noon – 4 pm.
On offer are horse and wagon rides, a food truck, old fashioned candy stand, old fashioned photo booth (with old west costumes) a playground and Live Music!
Everything is free as it is a Melcor event to promote their homes.

I’m up earlyish and cook my own Irish fry of fried eggs, potatoes, black pudding, toast & coffee. Now it’s time to get all that Irish tea into my luggage. I try my best not to forget anything and bid farewell to Ton and Barney & Lucy (the dogs).
I call in on Jackie and immediately Annie offers me a bowl of her famous soup. Jackie is visibly drawn from his treatments. I tell him stories about my travels and the tunes in town and who I played with him. He asks many questions and I am often able to remember a name for him. That man from Clare who played the fiddle and composed many tunes. “Junior Crehan?” “That’s him!”
I play tunes and chat with him for a good hour and a half. Then It’s time for his nap. Get well Jackie Please!!!!!!
I am finishing my trip in Ennis at the Fafa session with Blackie O’Connell & Siobhan Peoples. The plan is to play till 3:00 am like last week, hit the Chipper then car back to the airport. No Guinness for me. Good-bye Ireland, Hello Canada. (+13 in Kerry today -15 in Edmnonton).
Ennis is home to many wonderful statues – you can even do a statue tour.
